ICC U19 World Cup: The ICC Under-19 World Cup kicks off in 1988 in Australia. This tournament is held every 2 years. However it has only managed 13 seasons so far in the last 34 years. There is a 10 year long gap between the first and second seasons. After playing the first season in 1988, the ICC hosted the second season in 1998 in South Africa.
India have yet to host the ICC Under-19 World Cup. Despite this, it continues to dominate the tournament. India may not be the first champion in this ICC event, but it was certainly the most successful team in winning the title. The Indian team has won the ICC Under-19 World Cup title the most times so far.
After failing in the 1988 and 1998 Under-19 World Cups, India won the Under-19 World Cup for the first time in 2000 in Sri Lanka. India, led by Mohammad Kaif, clinched the title by defeating hosts Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the final in Colombo.
The first Under-19 world champion of the 21st century had to wait a long time again to repeat his success. 3 seasons have passed during this time. The Indian team suffered major setbacks in New Zealand (2002), Bangladesh (2004) and Sri Lanka (2006). India’s biggest defeat in the last match of the 2006 Under-19 World Cup was a 38-run defeat to arch-rivals Pakistan.
These failures eventually culminated in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia. The Indian Under-19 team, led by Virat Kohli, won the title once again and became the champions for the second time. In the rain-affected final, India defeated South Africa by 12 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis rules.
However, India lost again the following season. However, in 2012, it once again showed its power. Australia once again hosted the Under-19 World Cup on clay. India, led by Unmukt Chand, beat hosts Australia by 6 wickets in the final. This is the third time India have won the ICC Under-19 World Cup.
The Indian bag was empty without winning the title again for the next 2 seasons. The events in the UAE (2014) and Bangladesh (2016) disappointed India. In 2018, the tournament was held in New Zealand. It was not to be missed that India became champions for the fourth time here. The Indian Under-19 team, captained by Prithviraj Shah, beat Australia by 8 wickets in the final this time.
The 2020 ICC Under-19 World Cup was held in South Africa. With India reaching the final of this tournament, almost everyone expected to win the title for the 5th time. Because in the final there was a match against Bangladesh which was not as strong as India. But, this confidence team overwhelmed India. In the rain-affected final, Bangladesh beat India by 3 wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis rules. With this, Bangla won the title for the first time.
