IND vs SA: Newly-appointed vice-captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the three-match Test series against South Africa due to a hamstring injury. A few days after the BCCI announced that Rohit would replace Ajinkya Rahane as vice-chancellor, one of the most troubling news for Indian fans came out. As expected, there have been mixed reactions to the news on Twitter. Some fans are cracking down on Rohit. The Cricket Board said in a statement on Twitter that Priyank Panchal has replaced Rohit in the squad.
“Team India Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma suffered a left hamstring injury during his training session here in Mumbai yesterday. He missed the upcoming 3-match Test series against South Africa. Rohit Sharma has been replaced by Priyank Panchal in the Test squad, ”the BCCI tweeted.
Losing their regular opener services is like a big blow to Teamindia. Rohit, 34, has scored 1462 runs in 14 matches at an average of 58.48 with five centuries in 14 matches since he opened the Tests. On India’s recent tour of England, Rohit Sharma scored 368, including 127 at the Oval.
In addition, Rohit is currently the highest run scorer in the long format in India this year with 906 runs in 11 games. The board did not announce a stand-in vice-captain. However, KL Rahul is expected to lead Virat Kohli as his deputy during the Tests.
He is likely to be replaced by Rishabh Pant and Ravichandran Ashwin. Ajinkya Rahane has been dropped from the role of vice-captain for failing to guarantee his place in the playing XI. The Test series ends on January 15. The next three ODIs will start on January 19 in Parl.
