Ravi Shastri’s four-year tenure as head coach of the Indian cricket team ended in November 2021. During this period, Team India won many matches in the country and abroad, from Tests to ODIs. However, there were also controversies during the reign of Shastri. The former India coach gave his explanation in an interview with the English newspaper Times of India, especially on some controversial decisions regarding team selection.
Ajinkya Rahane – Team India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has been dropped from the final squad for the first two Tests of the 2018 tour of South Africa. It became a controversy at the time. Shastri explained the reasons for that. “A decision has to be made between Ajinkya and Rohit (Sharma). No place for both (in playing XI). Rohit scored. We could see the interest in playing the Test in him. That’s why we made the decision based on the form. Rohit failed in both the Tests and then in the last Test, Rahane came back and scored a half century to help the team win. ” Said the sage.
In the 2018 England series, Pujara was dropped from the final squad for the first Test. Team India lost that match. “We told them. He was not on the farm and he understood why he did so. Dropping him had an advantage for him. He played very well when he came back. Pujara played the next 4 Tests, scoring a century and a half. ” Shastri explained.
Ambati Rayudu has not been selected for the 2019 World Cup. Rayudu has been playing 4th on the team for almost two years. But he was not selected in the World Cup squad. This led to criticism. Shastri said it was the decision of the selectors. “It simply came to our notice then. But I am not happy with the decision to have 3 wicketkeepers in 3 World Cups. Shreyas Iyer or Ambati may come. What is the reason behind keeping MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik together? But I never interfered in the work of the selectors. Except for asking or discussing my opinion. Shastri said things that had happened in the past
