Cricket Australia’s former captain Tim Paine will be sidelined for a few days for all formats, Cricket Tasmania said on Friday. He stepped down as Test captain following the sexting scandal. The decision put an end to the debate over whether he should participate in the Ashes. The first Test against England starts in Brisbane on December 8. “After the last 24 hours of negotiations, Tim Pine has informed Cricket Tasmania. The Tasmanian keeper stepped down as Test captain a week ago in 2017 for publicly revealing that he had exchanged graphic text messages with a female colleague.
But when he stepped down as captain, Pine said he wanted to be a “committed member” of the Australian Test team at the time. He said he was looking forward to the Ashes tour. Australia opener Marcus Harris said on Wednesday that the Australian team had full support for Pine. He deserves to retain his place in the first Test. Pat Cummins and Steve Smith are in the new captaincy race. The new Test captain will be decided by a five-member panel. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has said the allegations against Tim Pine will have a serious impact on the Ashes series. Alex Carey is likely to replace Pine as wicketkeeper. Pine took over as captain in March 2018.
