The BCCI is reportedly in talks with Virat Kohli over the ODI captaincy in the wake of Rohit Sharma’s appointment as India’s T20 captain. BCCI sources told a news agency that the board hopes to remove Kohli from the captaincy in limited-overs cricket so that he can focus on his batting. Team India’s ODI captaincy is likely to change in the bilateral series against South Africa starting January 11, 2022. It is learned that the BCCI wants Rohit Sharma to take charge with KL even in the 50-over format.
The Test series against New Zealand starts on November 25 in Kanpur. BCCI sources told Virat Kohli that Virat Kohli is likely to retire in the 1st Test. Kohli will be replaced by vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. Rohit Sharma is likely to be rested for the two-match Test series against the Black Caps as there is a very small gap between the start of the second Test and the India Test series in South Africa. The BCCI on Tuesday announced a 16-member squad for the three-match T20 series against New Zealand in Jaipur on November 17. Rohit Sharma has been selected as the captain of the T20 team.
India will play three Test matches in South Africa from December 17. It will be followed by three ODIs and a four-match T20 series. India went home without reaching the knockout stage of the ICC T20 World Cup. The Virat Kohli-led team failed to reach the semi-finals after losing to Pakistan and New Zealand. Kohli was appointed captain of the limited-overs team in January 2017 following the resignation of former captain MS Dhoni. He has been leading the Test team since early 2015. Kohli captained India in 95 ODIs. With 65 wins and 27 losses, he has a 70 percent winning rate.
