The future of Virat Kohli as India’s ODI captain is likely to be revealed this week. The selectors will meet this week to select a team if the Indian government grants clearance for the tour of South Africa. The national selection committee headed by Chetan Sharma is likely to decide whether to continue Kohli as captain of the ODI team. BCCI officials say the Indian team’s tour of South Africa will continue.

However they are closely monitoring the situation in the country with the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant. “We will announce the Indian team in a few days. We prepare everything from our side, and then wait for government approval. If the government tells us to stop the tour, we will, but we have to select the team and keep it ready, ”a senior BCCI official told PTI on Wednesday.

The T20 World Cup will be held in Australia next year. India will play six matches abroad (three each against South Africa and England) in the next seven months. There are nine ODIs as well. Currently the BCCI has two ideas. Retaining Kohli as captain as there are only a few ODIs left. Giving Rohit enough time to prepare a strong squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. However, it is learned that BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah will decide on keeping Kohli as the ODI captain. Kohli has not won a single ICC tournament as captain. Personally his record is good.

The BCCI is currently committed to playing a full series with South Africa. However, talks are underway to shorten the three-Test series. India will play three Tests in the South African Tor.
