Virender Sehwag: It is learned that Virat Kohli played his last T20I as captain with Namibia on Monday. Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag, however, is adamant that he should continue in the lead role in the other two formats – Test and ODI. Virat Kohli’s tenure as captain of the Indian T20I team ended on Monday. The Indian team exited the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2021. It is learned that Kohli had announced before the tournament that he was stepping down as India captain in the short format.
India got off to a poor start in the World Cup with heavy defeats to long-time rivals Pakistan and New Zealand. Later, in the other two formats, too, the future of Kohli’s captaincy was in the blue. However, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag believes that the 33-year-old Kohli is leading the team brilliantly as captain and should not relinquish his leadership role in ODIs and Tests.
“It was Virat’s own decision. But, I don’t think Kohli will relinquish the captaincy of the other two formats. If he just wanted to play as a player, it was his decision. India will play well under Virat’s captaincy. He is known as the captain who has given India the most victories and Kohli is very intelligent, ”Sehwag said on his official Facebook page. Sehwag was responding to a fan question on whether Kohli should step down altogether.
“Kohli is a good player. Aggressive captain. He has been leading the Indian team since before. It is Kohli’s personal decision whether or not to relinquish the captaincy in ODIs and Tests, ”Sehwag said. However, the former opener stressed that the team needs to introspect on its poor performance in ICC tournaments. After winning the 2013 Champions Trophy under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India have yet to win an ICC title.
“I know we can support the team at a bad stage, but we have not won any major ICC tournaments in a long time. India must introspect on this. “Bilateral series is not just about winning. People will remember Minal if they win world tournaments consistently,” Sehwag said.
Meanwhile, Team India will play New Zealand in the three-match T20 series at home on November 17. It remains to be seen how the new captain and new coach Rahul Dravid will fare.
