Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman celebrates his 47th birthday today. Laxman has defended the team many times in dire situations. He gave victories to India with his batting. Laxman played some of the best innings of his international cricket career. Everyone remembers the innings he played against Australia. He played a historic innings of 281 against Australia in the famous Eden Gardens Test in Calcutta in 2001. This innings was one of the greatest in Test cricket history.
Australia will dominate that Test match. Moreover, India lost the first Test and are under pressure. It is a do or die match for India. The Aussies batted first and scored a massive 445 runs. India were all out for 171 in their first innings. With this, India had to play follow-on. The Indian openers were bowled out quickly in the second innings. Then there was VVS Laxman along with Rahul Dravid at the crease. A miracle happened after that. The duo formed a 376 partnership together, undermining the likes of giants like Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath in Australia.
Laxman scored 281 in the second innings of the match. He is the highest run scorer for India. Laxman’s brilliant innings gave India a solid victory. It created a sensation at the time. It also remains one of the greatest innings in the history of Indian cricket. Laxman’s record remained the same until Virender Sehwag broke the record in 2004. Laxman’s 104 against Pakistan was a great innings. Pakistan and India were tied 2-2 in the five-match ODI series in 2004. Laxman won the toss and elected to bat, despite India losing wickets regularly in the final decisive match in Lahore.
Laxman mostly plays against Australia. Laxman scored 73 in the first match of the 2010 two-Test series. India needed 216 runs to win but lost important wickets and got into trouble. Lakshman’s collaborators were fired. Fortunately, he played another memorable innings with the support of Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha. India won by one wicket. VVS Laxman retired from international cricket in 2012. Laxman scored 8,781 runs in 134 Tests and 2,338 runs in 86 ODIs.
